High Country Rail Trail Green Paper 2005 - Steaming Ahead latest rail trail happenings newsletter - September 2007
EBDEN RESERVE TO RECEIVE OVERHAUL: • Wodonga APEX have started work on restoring the former Ebden Railway Platform and other railway memorabilia. We look forward to working together to improve the amenity of this lakeside reserve.
KIEWA RIVER FOOTBRIDGE GETS “A BELTING”: • Since the official opening of Rob’s Bridge on the Kiewa last April, there has been a phenomenal amount of use of this section of the rail trail. This is most gratifying for BAG members who have invested many hours in developing and maintaining this magnificent section of floodplain. • Special thanks to Wodonga City Council for installing rubber matting over the steel decking of this bridge. We apologise for the delay in getting this done, however, there was considerable debate and research into what would be the most suitable material to reduce the slippery surface.
UPPER MURRAY HORSEMANS PITCH IN: • Special thanks to the Upper Murray Horseman’s Association who have worked with TAG to install horse yards at Tallangatta, with funds from a Department of Victorian Communities grant. • BAG has improved the Ebden-Huon equestrian trail with a small grant from Wodonga City Council.
OLD TALLANGATTA LOOKOUT ACCESS TRAIL: • Sunday 14th October will see many hands installing donated hand rails along the new access track. If you can help for a few hours over the weekend please drop down. Old clothes and energy is all we ask for. Thanks to Phillip Jewell and Ray Haas who have been busy welding sections of the handrails together, to speed the installation process.
SANDY CREEK INLET BRIDGE: • Thanks to Wodonga City Council staff for working away with Federal and State funding bodies to secure funding to reinstate this iconic bridge. • Thanks to EDM Surveying for survey work at a “community rate” and to WCC for managing the “design and construct” expressions of interest process. • This major project is a great example of the saying “the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of any of the parts”, where BAG, TAG, Parklands, GMW, DSE, WCC, Towong Shire Council and Indigo Shire Council are all contributing in whatever capacity they are able to transform this vision into reality.
KOETONG-SHELLEY SECTION: Despite the time commitments of the ongoing drought, the small Koetong-Shelley Development Association has continued to work away on maintaining this spectacular section of rail trail. • Congratulations to Lyn Coulston for winning another Landcare Award, in recognition of her considerable achievements over decades of work in the Upper Murray. • We are seeking funds to make the three Koetong trestle bridges safe with hand rails and much needed decking. Contact us if you have some time to spare or know of a business who may be keen to be promoted as supporting this community project.
PROTECTING OUR NATIVE GRASSLANDS: • Thank you to Vic Track and the Ian Potter Foundation for funding environmental works to protect and restore native grasslands along the rail trail corridor. Environmental burns are planned for the coming months for some sections of trail.
FRIENDS OF THE RAIL TRAIL RIDES: • Our events have had great attendance. In March, 50 participated in the Tallangatta to Old Tallangatta or Jarvis Creek circuits, with scrummo morning tea provided by Winnawoo B&B. Thirty pedalled out to Sandy Creek for a BBQ hosted by TAG in June. • TAG is organizing a “cycle crawl” from Corryong to Tallangatta in November. Bookings essential. If you would like to become involved in the High Country Rail Trail project, please contact us for some more information on what you can do.
