Map of the High Country Rail Trail

The trail has two stages. To get to the rail trail, follow the paved bike trail from the Gateway Island Visitor Information Centre on the highway between Albury and Wodonga to Sumsion Gardens in Wodonga. Head south down Church St to the Wodonga Railway Station then along High St (Wodonga's main street) to the Watertower.  Take the Snow Road (Thomas Mitchell Drive) where a 6km bike track runs on the southern side (right) along the service road. Follow this well signed bitumen then gravel bike path out to the Saleyards. You are now in the country with great country tucker and smells emanating from one of the busiest saleyards in South East Australia.  Turn right and across the Middle Creek floodway then left and head across the magnificent Kiewa floodplains and traverse 16km's of high conservation value bush reserves to Huon Reserve.

From Huon Reserve, it is a 4km return trip to the Sandy Creek Inlet where you can check out the former railway bridge pylons.  We are fundraising to "bridge the 600 metre gap" that will eventually link the Bonegilla section with the Tallangatta section.  In the meantime at this point, you can either follow a temporary pathway along the base of the pylons when the Lake Hume level is sufficiently low, or else continue on a 9km journey around the Sandy Creek Inlet along the busy Murray Valley Highway to rejoin the High Country Rail Trail at the Towonga Shire sign.  Keep an eye out for the logging trucks.

Stage two is the 18km Tallangatta section.  Check out the wildflowers and magnificent box woodlands as the trail skirts Lake Hume. The section between Tallangatta and the Mitta Mitta River is sealed. A truly magnificent and picturesque ride.

Equestrian Trail:
The starting point for equestrians to ride along the shore line of the magnificent Lake Hume is at Ebden and follows Lake Hume for 9km to Huon. More hitching rails can be found at Murrays' Way, Tallangatta and the Omeo Highway where this 15km section of equestrian trail can be accessed.
